6 Tips for Road Trips with Pets

Leaving the Logan area this summer?  If you’re hitting the open road with your 4-legged friend, check out these 6 quick tips for travelling with pets.

1. Get A Veterinarian Checkup

Make sure that your pet is up to date on vaccinations, and has the proper documentation to prove it.

2. Test the Waters

If it’s been a while since you left town with your pet, you may want to do a test run.  Your pet may normally do very well on short trips to the dog park or the vet, but may not react well to a longer trip.  Do a test run with a 2 or 3 hour mini trip so that you know if they start to get agitated or sick.

3. Research Pet Friendly Hotels

The last thing you want to do is arrive at your hotel only to realize that one furry family member isn’t welcome.  Make sure that you confirm a current pet policy by contacting the hotel directly.

4. Plan for Pet Pit Stops

Just like small children, pets start to get restless being cooped up in the car.  Make sure you stop every few hours so that they can get a little exercise and have a quick bathroom break.

5. Pack a “Doggy Bag”

To keep from forgetting anything, make a list of items that your pet would need for your trip.

Don’t forget:

Food

Medication

Leash

Puppy Pads (To prevent hotel mishaps)

Toys and Blankets

6. Stay Safe

Make sure that your pet’s tag has your current contact information in case of separation.  Include your cell phone number on the tag instead of your home phone number.

For safety reasons, small dogs and cats should travel in crates or travel-safe beds.  Larger pets should be restrained with car seat belt harnesses.  Never allow your pets to ride in your lap or at your feet.

As a member of the family, your pet is a great addition to your road trip.
