In the book, titled, “Field Guide to Pack Rats: Closet Cases”  Dr. Randy Frost, a psychologist, from Smith College explains the psychology behind this condition.

First and foremost, let us understand what it is.

So, what is it exactly? Well, becoming a pack rat is a symptom of hoarding. Hoarding is a disorder, classified within the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, as a psychological disorder related to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It is a disorder which has been extensively studied by scientists.

Additionally, the Association’s fact sheet on Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders describes hoarding disorder as characterized by the persistent struggle parting with, or renouncing their possessions. Moreover, it is an issue that they face regardless of the value other individuals assign to these said properties. This behavior normally has adverse effects. More than 5% of the total world’s population exhibits clinical pack-rat behavior. That number is twice the amount who suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

First of all, Do not go all throughout your home and start throwing random items into the dumpster at once. This act may lead you to feel strong sentiments of regret and anxiety. What you should do is go over one small space in your home or collection each week. It will allow you to focus. Furthermore, it will give you enough leeway to accomplish the task, without that nagging feeling of regret.

Control that tendency to put something aside “for now.” Take the time to make a choice and decision about an item in the present. That way, you do not have to handle it each time you decide to get everything organized.

If you have kept and stored all of your childhood knick-knacks, you can choose to save, at most, 1-2 items. Then, either donate them or transfer them to a storage facility.  Another excellent tip is to try displaying or framing an object from a collection. After that, you can then consign, give away, or recycle the rest. You can likewise do the same for your children’s artwork or collection.  Have them select two or three pieces of their collection. You then store it in their baby book or display it on a wall. Saving things for your child for each school year with a picture and items that are special from that year is a good way to highlight them.

Having issues deciding whether to keep or throw an item? Just place it in a “Decision Box” for six months. Now, if you do not open the box before that amount of time expires, you can give it up without regret. It is an excellent approach for individuals who save items like magazines, newspaper clippings, random stuff, and the like.

Let us say that that number of items you have placed in the “Decision Box” has reached a point where the need to dispose of is inevitable. The best thing to do is host a yard sale. It allows you earn some cash while effectively decreasing unnecessary stuff, which can cause clutter, in your home. Alternatively, think seriously about consignment. This way you still get some money back for the item.
